Nonprofit & Advocacy Platform Compliance Guide
Charities and advocacy groups sit in one of the most rule-heavy corners of platform policy — where issue content is classified as political advertising, donation ads need verification, and an unsupported impact claim can restrict an account. Use the keyword risk checker to flag risky wording before you launch a campaign.
Critical Compliance Risks
Social-issue & political ad category
Meta classifies issue and cause advertising as social/political ads (its Social Issues, Elections & Politics category) — triggering advertiser authorization, identity verification, and a "paid for by" disclaimer. Google's political-ad rules apply to election ads specifically rather than general issue or cause content. See Meta ad policies.
Fundraising & solicitation rules
Donation and fundraising features require nonprofit verification through each platform's native fundraising tools, and some jurisdictions require charitable-solicitation registration before you can raise funds there.
Greenwashing & impact claims
Sustainability and cause claims must be substantiated — "carbon neutral", "100%", or unproven impact figures face regulator and platform scrutiny (for example the FTC Green Guides in the US and the EU Empowering Consumers Directive, 2024/825) under unsubstantiated claims rules.
Issue-content reach restrictions
Advocacy content on divisive topics faces suppressed reach and stricter moderation, and can be actioned without much warning — even organic posts.
Political transparency & ad libraries
Political and issue ads carry transparency and repository duties — in the EU under the Transparency of Political Advertising Regulation (2024/900), with the DSA (Article 39) requiring an all-ads repository; missing "paid for by" data leads to platform enforcement.
Sensitive campaign imagery
Graphic imagery common to cause campaigns (conflict, poverty, animal welfare) is restricted or age-gated across visual platforms. Review imagery standards.
Platform Specific Restrictions
Meta Guidelines
"Issue, election, and political ads fall in a special ad category (SIEP) requiring authorization and a "Paid for by" disclaimer; Meta also removes some sensitive-topic detailed targeting (the strict age/gender/radius lockouts apply to Housing/Employment/Credit, not SIEP). See Meta ad policies."
TikTok Guidelines
"Paid political advertising is prohibited, and cause content is actively moderated; branded fundraising must follow disclosure rules. See TikTok community guidelines."
Google Guidelines
"Political and election ads require advertiser identity verification and a jurisdiction check; some issue content is restricted. Check the Google Ads policy guide."
LinkedIn Guidelines
"Political ads are not permitted; advocacy content is held to professional-community standards and disclosure norms. See LinkedIn advertising policies."
YouTube Guidelines
"Election and political ads require verification; sensitive-topic advocacy content can be demonetized or limited. See YouTube advertiser-friendly guidelines."
X Guidelines
"Cause-based ads are permitted under specific policy, but political content is labeled and moderated; verify eligibility first. See X ads policy."
Snapchat Guidelines
"Political and advocacy ads require verification and disclosure, with regional restrictions on what may run. See Snapchat advertising guide."
Pinterest Guidelines
"Political campaign ads are prohibited; advocacy content is governed by community guidelines and misleading-claims rules. See Pinterest advertising policy."
