TikTok Shop Loosens Weight Management Rules and Allows GLP-1 Support Products (US)
TikTok Shop's September 2026 US health content update replaces a blanket weight-claim ban with a high-risk-only rule and carves out products that support people using GLP-1 medications.
In an update dated 09/02/2026, TikTok Shop US narrowed its weight management rule: only high-risk weight loss and muscle gain claims are prohibited, and general, low-risk weight management messaging to adults (18+) is permitted. Products using GLP-1 terms in their title or branding stay banned, except products clearly marketed as supportive products for people using GLP-1 medications. Prescription and compounded GLP-1 products may not be sold or promoted.
What Changed
TikTok Shop updated its US policy page "Requirements for Responsible Health-Related Content" on 09/02/2026. The update narrows how weight management claims are treated for sellers and creators promoting products on TikTok Shop in the United States.
The direction is a loosening. Instead of treating weight-related statements broadly as prohibited, the policy now targets high-risk claims and explicitly permits general, low-risk messaging aimed at adults.
"High-risk weight management statements are prohibited. This includes high-risk weight loss claims and high-risk muscle gain claims. [...] General, low-risk weight management messaging directed at adult (18+) audiences is permitted.
— TikTok Shop, Requirements for Responsible Health-Related Content (US), 09/02/2026"
| Area | Rule on the updated page |
|---|---|
| High-risk weight loss or muscle gain claims | Prohibited |
| General, low-risk weight management messaging | Permitted when directed at adults (18+) |
| Sports and fitness equipment | Exempt, even with weight- or muscle-related imagery |
| Products using "GLP" or "GLP-1" in title or branding | Not permitted, except GLP-1 support products (below) |
The GLP-1 Carve-Out
The page keeps a ban on products that use "Glucagon-like peptide (GLP)", "GLP-1" or similar terms in their product title or branding, but adds an exception:
"This does not apply to products clearly marketed as supportive products for individuals using GLP-1 medications.
— TikTok Shop, Requirements for Responsible Health-Related Content (US), 09/02/2026"
The page's FAQ draws the line clearly. Prescription or high-risk weight loss products, "for example, compounded GLP-1 medications", may not be sold or promoted on TikTok Shop. Supportive products "may be sold and promoted if they clearly support individuals using GLP-1 medications and do not claim to act as, replace, or enhance GLP-1 medications."

What Counts as High-Risk
The policy lists high-risk indicators, which include:
- Quantified or timeline promises (for example, a set number of pounds in a set time)
- Before-and-after body-comparison imagery tied to a promoted product (outside the sports and fitness equipment exemption)
- Claims of equivalence to prescription drugs, including GLP-1 medications, anabolic steroids or other controlled substances
- Content that encourages intentional misuse of a product for weight loss or muscle gain
- Hashtags that could be read as promoting high-risk weight loss or muscle gain

What We Know and What We Don't
| Known (from TikTok Shop's policy page) | Not known |
|---|---|
| The page is dated 09/02/2026 and applies to the United States; the high-risk rule, the adult low-risk permission, the equipment exemption and the GLP-1 support carve-out quoted above. | Why TikTok made the change; whether the same rules will extend to other TikTok Shop markets; how enforcement of "low-risk" is judged in practice. |
Checklist for Sellers and Creators
- Direct general weight management messaging only to adult (18+) audiences.
- Remove quantified or timeline weight promises and body before-and-after imagery for non-equipment products.
- Market GLP-1 companion products only as supportive products, never as acting like, replacing or enhancing GLP-1 medications.
- Do not list or promote prescription or compounded GLP-1 products.
- Follow further changes on the Policy Tracker.
