What Tobacco Advertising means

Tobacco advertising is one of the most universally prohibited categories in digital advertising. All major ad platforms — Meta, Google, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Snapchat, and Pinterest — prohibit advertising for tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, rolling tobacco, and tobacco accessories. Most platforms also restrict or prohibit e-cigarettes and vaping products, though policies vary. Legal frameworks include the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), the US Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, the EU Tobacco Advertising Directive, and numerous national laws. The prohibition typically extends to branded merchandise, sponsorships, and branded content that promotes tobacco products. Some platforms have narrow exceptions for cessation products or harm reduction information, but these require careful navigation of platform-specific policies.
