Content Moderation
The process by which platforms review and enforce rules on user-generated and advertising content.
What Content Moderation means
Content moderation encompasses all systems and processes platforms use to review, approve, restrict, or remove content — including advertisements. Moderation occurs through automated systems (machine learning classifiers, keyword filters, image recognition), manual human review, and hybrid approaches. For advertising, content moderation includes pre-publication review (where ads are reviewed before going live), post-publication monitoring, user reporting mechanisms, and appeal processes. The EU Digital Services Act imposes specific requirements on platforms regarding content moderation transparency, due process, and regular reporting. Understanding how platforms moderate content helps advertisers anticipate what will be flagged and design compliant campaigns from the start.
