What BfJ (Federal Office of Justice, Germany) means

The Bundesamt für Justiz (Federal Office of Justice, BfJ) is a German federal agency tasked with enforcing content moderation obligations on social media platforms operating in Germany. Originally the principal enforcement body under the Netzwerkdurchsetzungsgesetz (NetzDG, 2017), much of its scope has been integrated with the EU Digital Services Act since 2024. BfJ retains residual authority under NetzDG (24-hour takedown for manifestly illegal content; 7-day window for other unlawful content) and works alongside the State Media Authorities (Landesmedienanstalten) on broader media regulation. BfJ has issued multi-million-euro fines against major platforms for systemic failures in content removal timelines.
