Pixel
A piece of code installed on a website that tracks user actions and sends data back to an ad platform for measurement and optimization.
What Pixel means
A tracking pixel (or ad pixel) is a JavaScript code snippet installed on a website that monitors user behavior and sends event data to an advertising platform. Meta Pixel, Google Tag, TikTok Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag, and Pinterest Tag are the primary implementations. Pixels enable conversion tracking, audience building (website custom audiences), event optimization, and attribution. From a compliance perspective, pixels are personal data processing tools that require proper consent under GDPR and ePrivacy Directive, disclosure in privacy policies, and implementation with consent management platforms. The effectiveness of browser-based pixels has decreased due to ad blockers, Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP), and cookie restrictions, driving adoption of server-side alternatives (CAPI). Proper pixel implementation includes consent-gated firing, data minimization, and regular auditing of collected data.
